Piazza di Spagna and the Scalinata

After having a great time at Fontana di Trevi, we went to Piazza di Spagna afterwards. And it is also where the Scalinata is located or famously known as the Spanish steps, the longest and widest staircase in all Europe. La Fontana della Barcaccia can also be found just below the Scalinata.

As usual, I don't have great pictures of the scenery, plus Trinita dei Monti (the Church on top of the steps) was also under renovation and we didn't see any flowers blooming, just like what you saw on the posters and cards.

Just click here for some information about Piazza di Spagna and the Spanish Steps.

Spanish Steps is also famous because most fashion shows in Italy are held in the grand stairs.

Behind is La Fontana della Barcaccia.

Still with La Fontana della Barcaccia. We also refilled our drinking bottles from the fountain.

At the Spanish Steps.Part of Trinità dei Monti is also seen in the picture.

A sitting model of Scalinata,hehehe.

My kind of musical instrument

I just did this for the love of music. I really wanted to learn how to play the guitar or any musical instrument since childhood, but to no avail, I failed.heheh. I'm the only "non-musical" person in our family, hehehe.

Hmmm but the result is quite nice coz I really love to look at drummers when they play coz it's really cool. In fact, I had a drummer crush before, hehehe.
You Should Play the Drums

You are often hyper, restless, and full of a little too much zeal.
However, people may be surprised to know that you can focus your energy well.

You are driven and engaged enough to be a great drummer... and you have the stamina to practice for hours.
In fact, when you can channel your energy productively, it only increases!

You are independent and spirited... but also consistent. You can definitely keep the beat.
You work well in a group and contribute heartily - without needing to take the lead.

Your dominant personality characteristic: your aggression

Your secondary personality characteristic: your precision

Irritability

Been so irritable in the fast few days, so I did a little research about it. I found a lot of interesting results and one of the results that caught my attention is the hormonal imbalance reason. Irritability and mood swings can be an effect of low Progesterone levels in the feminine body.

Progesterone is produced generally by the ovaries and plays a role in maintaining pregnancy. It also helps prepare your body for conception and pregnancy and regulates the monthly menstrual cycle. However, progesterone level lowers during a woman's pre-menopausal period, thus, causing a lot of side effects which include irritablity and mood swings as well as irregular menstrual cycles, heavy menstrual bleeding, endometriosis and uterine fibroids and tender breasts.

Ohhh my, does it mean that I'm on my pre-menopausal period??I hope not.I want to get married and have children first. So I think, I have to do it very soon, hehehe. But it's only one of the possible reasons of irritability though, so no worries for now, hehehe.

Fontana di Trevi

Fontana di Trevi was our next stop, right after the Colosseum. We really had a great time in Fontana di Trevi, just like in other structures that we've been too. And it was really crowded there, we got a hard time moving to get close to the wishing fountain. A lot of people were there with just one purpose..to make a wish! And as we finally made our way to the fountain, ohhh my, we saw millions of coins on the bottom of the fountain!Different kinds of coins. The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is the largest — standing 25.9 meters (85 feet) high and 19.8 meters (65 feet) wide — and most ambitious of the Baroque fountains of Rome. It is located in the rione of Trevi.

I thought that the coin throwing means that there's a chance for our wish to come true. But I found out the following day about the truth. So we did throw coin and we joked to our Argentinian amigos that we throw coins several times and even drink some water from the fountain to make sure that our wish will be granted, hahahah. But it's true, we really did those. We throw coins many times and refill our drinking bottles and drink in the small fountain on the side.

A little bit off to the right.Hirap kumuha ng center photo sa sobrang dami ng tao.

Fontana di Trevi.Yesss,finally it's already centered,based on my standard,hehehe.

Trying to get a great pose at the left side of the fountain, where we refilled out drinking bottles.

And here's the truth about the coin throwing I read on my Guide to Rome book bought by my employer before the trip and the info can also be read in wikipedia.com:

A traditional legend holds that if visitors throw a coin into the fountain, they are ensured a return to Rome. Among those who are unaware that the "three coins" of Three Coins in the Fountain were thrown by three different individuals, a reported current interpretation is that two coins will ensure a marriage will occur soon, while three coins leads to a divorce. A reported current version of this legend is that it is lucky to throw three coins with one's right hand over one's left shoulder into the Trevi Fountain.

Approximately 3,000 Euros are thrown into the fountain each day and are collected at night. The money has been used to subsidize a supermarket for Rome's needy. However, there are regular attempts to steal coins from the fountain, including some using a magnetized pole.

Yeheyyyyyyy,so it means that I have an assurance of coming back to Rome. I hope it's really true, hehehe.

Be insured

Though travelling is really an adventure and a lot of fun, but it's risky too. We really don't know what would happen to us as we travel, be it alone or with our family. So, we better prepare by getting a term life insurance for the entire family to ensure the future of our loved ones, in case something bad will happen to us. God forbids! But atleast, we have to be ready because we'll never know what the future holds for us.

The Colosseum

After having picture taking at The Arch of Constantine, we walked directly towards the neighboring Colosseum. I was really in awe while watching the great structure. I just can't believe that I'm still seeing a structure built many generations before.I was like transported into the old time, hehehe.

Here's a short information of the Colosseum from wikipedia.com:

The Colosseum or Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering.

Occupying a site just east of the Roman Forum, its construction started between 70 and 72 AD under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus, with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign.[1]

Originally capable of seating around 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. It remained in use for nearly 500 years with the last recorded games being held there as late as the 6th century – well after the traditional date of the fall of Rome in 476. As well as the traditional gladiatorial games, many other public spectacles were held there, such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building eventually ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such varied purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry and a Christian shrine.

Although it is now in a ruined condition due to damage caused by earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum has long been seen as an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. Today it is one of modern Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession to the amphitheatre.

And here's our photos:

That was it.I didn't have photo of the structure alone and I'm not thinking about taking good pictures of the structures we visited. But all I had in mind before was to take pictures of myself as much as possible, grrrrrrrrrr. But promise, I'll be a good photographer on my next travel, hopefully!heheheh

By the way,we didn't go inside the Colosseum coz we had to pay an entrance fee and we were short of budget that time, huhhuhu.Though I really wanted to go inside. But we are planning to have an interrail next summer with my cousins here and Rome would be one of the destinations. If it will push through, then I'll definitely go inside the Colosseum.

Arch of Constantine

From the famous forum Romanum, we went directly to the Arch of Constantine. It is a triumphal arch in Rome, situated between the Colosseum and the Palatine Hill. It was erected to commemorate Constantine I's victory over Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge on October 28, 312 AD. Dedicated in 315, it is the latest of the existing triumphal arches in Rome, from which it differs by spolia, the extensive re-use of parts of earlier buildings. For more information about the structure, just click here.

Quality of life in Scandinavia is the best

Here's the complete script from Yahoo News:

Nordic countries take the greatest care of their environment and their people, according to a ranking published on Thursday by the publication Reader's Digest.

Finland comes top of the 141-nation list, followed by Iceland, Norway and Sweden, and then Austria, Switzerland, Ireland and Australia.

At the bottom of the list is Ethiopia, preceded by Niger, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso and Chad.

The United States comes in 23rd, China 84th and India 104th.

The ranking combines environmental factors, such as air and water quality, respect for biodiversity and greenhouse-gas emissions, as well as social factors, such as gross domestic product, access to education, unemployment rate and life expectancy.

The statistical basis is the UN's Human Development Index and the Environmental Sustainability Index drawn up by Yale and Columbia universities and the World Economic Forum.

European countries -- again, led by Scandinavia -- also top the Reader's Digest assessment of 72 cities for their quality of life. The criteria for this include public transport, parks, air quality, rubbish recycling and the price of electricity.

The winner is Stockholm, followed by Oslo, Munich and Paris.

Asia's mega-cities fare the worst. At the bottom is Beijing, preceded by Shanghai, Mumbai, Guangzhou and Bangkok.

next stop: Forum Romanum

Yesss!!our next stop was the Forum Romanum and I was really in awe while watching the old Roman Empire. I took the tour with Raul and Eladio because the girls were already tired of walking and decided to stay in the church nearby. At first, I also thought of not going with them but then I don't want to miss a thing on our tour. So I decided to go and I just realized (I'm already here in Norway) that I did the right decision in going with them. Because during that time, I didn't know how historical is Forum Romanum. I already forgot my history or I was absent during the lesson, hehehe. And what was worst was that, I took a very few pictures because the ruins didn't appeal to me. Darn!!If only I knew about it, I would have take loads of pictures, huhuhh. Anyways, blame it to my stupidity and here's some of the photos I took:

Birdwatching

I just read the news from edition.cnn.com today that the old-fashioned act of birdwatching is hot again as people look for outdoor activities that don't require a lot of equipment or training compared to hunting and fishing, which are declining in popularity.

According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, which tracks wildlife recreation, birdwatching is now a hobby of 47.8 million Americans, with "wildlife watching" up 8 percent from 2000 to 2006. The birdwatching trend comes as both hunting and fishing declined in popularity, by 4 percent and 12 percent, respectively, over the same period.

More than 20 states have created "birding trails" since 2000 to guide newcomers to good spots to watch fowl. Outfitters that once specialized in hunting expeditions or horseback riding are branching out to offer trips focusing on feathery critters, too.

Argentinian amigos

Yesss, we met 2 friends from Argentina during our vacation in Rome. We were carrying our heavy baggages and looking for our tent in the camping site and then suddenly 2 men came and offered help. At first, we were hesitant, but then they introduced themselves and they were so polite. They should be at their age, heheheh. They're in their 40's. We really had fun talking with them because they speak Spanish and we understood some terms. We call them Tiyo Raul and Tiyo Eladio, heheheh. Raul owns a French restaurant in Argentina, while Eladio is an engineer. They were started their vacation galore in Thailand until they reach Europe in time for the football finals in Germany (I'm no longer sure). Argentina played during the finals, but they lost the game. So they were very upset about it. They gave us the cheering hat for Argentina, soo sweet of them. They were already on travel for a month and then they were stranded in Rome on their way back home, that was why they stayed at the camping site. Raul was not so good in speaking english, so he speak spanish to us, as if we understood, heheheh. But it was ok because we understood some words though.

And so back to the tour, hehehe. We had our rest in one corner of Piazza Venezia and we were eating the food we brought with us. We were happy eating and chatting when Tiyo Raul and tiyo Eladio popped out of nowhere, hehehe. What a coincidence! We didn't even ask them about their routine for the day. And so we decided to go with them on their next stop because they had a bookguide and it's fun to be with them too because they're always joking.

So off we go to our next stop, but we took some pictures while on the street.hehehe.

The bellisimas on our way to the next attraction.:)

with our Argentinian amigos.Tiyo Raul on the left side (the one choking me,hehehe) and Tiyo Eladio on the right (inbetween Arlene & Ate Cath).

still with our Argentinian amigos. They gave us flowers to put on our ears, but it was only me who's wearing it,hehehe. Maybe Arlene & Ate Cath had thrown theirs already.

And that was the picture taking while going to the next stop..Til the next episode!

1st stop : Piazza Venezia

We finally arrived at Camping Roma, the camping site that where we stayed, on July 6 and we just slept the entire day after arranging our things inside the tent. We occupied 2 tents (Arlene & I in one tent ; Ate Cath and our luggages on the other), :). We could have stayed together in a little house (I forgot the term), but we have to pay more, so we just decided to take the tents.

We officially started roaming around Rome on July 7 and our 1st stop was Piazza Venezia. The square is delimited by Palace Venezia, Palace Bonaparte, Palace of Generali and it is overhanged by the imposing Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II.

This monument, also called the Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style by Giuseppe Sacconi, to honour the first king of Italian state Vittorio Emanuele II of Savoy. The entrance is a large stairway, in whose middle there is the Tomba del Milite Ignoto (Tomb of Unknown Soldier) also called Altare della Patria (Country's Altar), where is buried an unkown soldier from the First World War, symbolizing the numerous soldiers dead in the Great War without a named tomb. Inside Vittoriano there is the Central Museum of Risorgimento.

Palace Venezia, which had become famous because from its balcony on the noble floor Mussolini made his speeches to the crowd, is indeed an important Renaissance palace, built by pope Paul II Farnese. Inside the palace there is a museum of Minor Arts from the Middle Ages, which exhibites works of enamel, inlay, jewelry; and a collection of bronze works and ceramics from Renaissance.

Info about Piazza Venezia taken from www.capriweb.com.

Weekend break

My friends and I had talked about our tiring job as an au pair. We all agreed that we need short breaks from our daily routine. Perhaps, weekend breaks will do. A weekend getaway to Venice is a nice idea and it's been in my plans long time ago to visit the romantic City one day. We're planning to have the weekend break in October since our hostfamilies are also having vacation that time. We just hope that we can find cheap flights, if not, then all plans will be wasted.huhuhu.

I've been searching the web lately and I found interesting offers at Dialaflight. It's a leading independent UK travel company that offers flights, hotels & travel ideas worldwide. It's really a perfect site for the planned weekend break because you can search for flights, hotels, car hire and many travel ideas including city breaks, beach holidays, spa holidays & much more. So if you are also planning to have a short break from your hectic schedule, then visit Dialaflight now.

I still have to mention and discuss this news to my friends and hope for a positive result.

Yoga gateaway

I just read about the latest news that the travel industry gets enlightened by yoga vacations."Don't just take a vacation. Change your life." - this is the latest quote that the travel industry is giving emphasis and it's the concept resorts are selling to a growing number of people for whom an exotic getaway just isn't enough. The purveyors of yoga and wellness vacations promise more than mere relaxation; they promise transformation.Ask why someone would choose a yoga vacation -- and the meditation, body contortions and discipline that goes with it -- and the answer repeats: People go for life-changing experiences.

Hmmm, this sounds interesting. I would also prefer a vacation that would offer tranformation and not only mere relaxation.

Drug problem

Drug problem is getting worse and worse. It's all present in the places that I have been to and I think it's already all-over-the-globe. More lives are ruined due to drugs. How can we stop it? I'm really worried when I heard the news that there are already drug dealers in our place and the users are the high school student of the school located in our place. Ohhhh my, I can't really believe it. And what worries me more is the fact that there's no drug rehab in our place. So what will happen to those students if they'll continue using drugs and become addicted. What should their parents do to help them? Where should they ask for help? Ohhh my, I really hope that the local government will take immediate action about the problem and put the dealers into jail, as soon as possible.

Summer vacation 2006 : Italia

Hi everyone! Finally got the time and urge to write about my experiences last summer vacation 2006 as roam around Italia.Yes, I spent my vacation their for 9 days with Ate Cathy and Arlene, my filipina friends who were also working as an au pair in Denmark that time. Ate Cathy is also working in Norway now and Arlene is in the Philippines, studying nursing. And another good thing about that vacation : everything was paid by my hostfamily in Denmark. The plane ticket, my camping site and my allowance for the vacation. They're really sooo generous and kind to me.

As I posted before, I'm gonna post my travels by segments or episode because it will be a very longgggggg post if it will be in just one post and for sure I won't have enough energy to finish writing it,hehehe.

With Ate Cathy in the check-in area while waiting for our turn.

With Arlene, still waiting for our turn.

Back to the "Italia" get away. We went to Copenhagen airport on July 5, 2006 and waited for boarding. Finally the boarding time came, but then when we're already at the pane, the pilot announced that something's wrong with one of the engines! My God!Thanks and the problem was noticed before the departure, God is indeed good all the time.

Roaming around d shops after d pilot announced d engine problem.

So we went back to the waiting area and informed my employer about it since she was the one who booked for our tickets and accomodation. The incident at the airport is still vivid in my mind, we were the only people who were happy to be delayed (hehehe) because the travel company was giving food vouncher to us,hahaha. and everytime they'll announce that it's time to claim the food voucher, we were giggling while others where murmuring and complaning.:)They distributed food vouchers for 2 times. We ate in the same food chain for 2 times and we got to know Kuya Christian there. He's the cook there and he's filipino. He came from the same place as Arlene and he's already living there together with her Mom who's already married to a Dane.

After eating using d food voucher.Behind is where Kuya Christian works.

The engine problem was finally fixed and the plane flew very late. We're suppose to be in Italy the same day, but the flight arrangements were changed. We had a stop- over in Berlin, Germany and they booked us in a hostel there (we only slept for approx 3 hours) and a bus picked us up early in the morning (4 am) to the airport for the flight to Rome. And during the check-in, a disaster happened. An embarassing experience I really can't forget. I had this secret pocket with me courtesy of my employers' parents. They lend it to me to keep my money safe and adviced me to tie it with my undies, hahhaha. Very funny, but I willingly obliged. I passed the security control in Copenhagen without a problem. So I was confident enough that there will be no problem too in Berlin., but I was wrong. The detector made a sound and the guard searched me. He found something bulky near my legs, so I explained about the secret bag. Darn!He want it removed, so I turn around and opened my jeans and removed the bag and I was laughing because I find it hilarious and embarassing at the same time. The security shouted "it's not funny, it's security", so I just shut my mouth and murmured silently, hehhehe. We landed at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport.

Outside Berlin Airport with Ate Cath, very early in the morning.

Inside Berline airport with Arlene before the security disaster occured, hehehe.

Thanks God and we're finally in Leonardo da Vinci- Fiumicino Airport.

We arrived there at around 10 in the morning and it took us hours before we finally came to Camping Roma, the camping site where we stayed. Our booking for the bus that will take us to camping Roma was already cancelled, so we booked for a new one, but we find it difficult and language barrier added to the difficulty. Most Italians, don't understand English or they just don't wanna speak the language. I don't know the real score. But nevertheless, talking to them is really difficult.

'til the next Italia episode!Happy Thursday everyone!

Call your family back home

It's really difficult living abroad and staying away from your own family. That's also my case here in Norway.I missed my family so much, but good thing and I have also my cousins and a lot of friends here,so the homesickness is lessened.Though we are far from our families, but we alwys communicate with them by sending them text messages or by calling them using international calling cards.

My friends and I spend a lot of money in calling cards since we are calling our family back home constantly and calling cards here are expensive.I made a research before on how to lessen the expenses in international calls and I stumble upon Pingo. It's a site that offers prepaid calling service to both consumers and business costumers and they bound to deliver the best calling card experience, including quality, convenience, and customer service at the most competitive rates available today and they don't have additional charges, but just a nominal monthly maintenance fee.

Pingo has Pingo Business & Family Plan,Pingo Ratewatcher, and Pingo's calling card affiliate program and cell phone card which you can avail depending on your choice.Visit their website now for the detailed information of their services and save a great deal of money in calling your family back home.
